Un manteau blanc - The snow is there

Grenoble viewed from Vercors - Grenoble vue du Vercors

Grenoble, the capital of the French Alps, is a university and scientific town surrounded with mountain. Photos below, taken in height, illustrate well this situation.

The city is in the valley in the shape of "Y". Far away is the chain of Belledone with the ski
resort" Chamrousse " on the summit below the small grey cloud. To the right the cliffs of
the vercors, the photo is taken in approximately 600 m of height. To the left, the "Chartreuse"
which comes to end at the foot of Grenoble.

Another point of seen from the high mountain pastures of Vercors, not far from Méaudre,
the height is approximately of 1500m. On the horizon, "Belledone" in the mist, upper left the Chartreuse, Grenoble appears in the valley.

Snow, snow, snow

Finally, the snow arrived on our Chartreuse montains last Saturday and Sunday

and the entire family went out for a walk.

Sydney, our old dog, 9,5 years-old, did not remember that ...it was an old dog.

The Chartreuse Shepperd, a unique specimen in the race, LOVES snow
and forget its back pain and its first rheumatisms.

And after, guess what ?
(Et après, devinez quoi ?)

Colors of the Fall in Chartreuse

A short hike in the forest during the school leaves.

I love these beautiful colors, in one or two weaks at most the leaves will all be on the ground.

The Great Sure (La Grande Sure), from another point of view

Can see the cross at the summit ?

The Fall is coming

Mid October, the leaves are turning yellow or red in the garden or in the Chartreuse montain.

The temperature falls down to 4°C during the night but the days are still very nice.
The summit of the "Great Sure"becomes reddish at the sunset.

Can you see the cross at the top ?

The Great Sure

La Grande Sure or "The Great Sure" is a summit in Chartreuse mountains,
just below 2000m (precisely 1920m of altitude).

My house is facing the north west face of the Great Sure, the view could be worse !

Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter, the landscape is magnificent.

Below, two views, toward the south, from the top of "The Great Sure".

I just love  the  sea of clouds....

Colourful mushroom

This picture was taken in a forest in the mountains Chartreuse, during a walk in Spring.

Fomitopsis pinicola is the scientific name of this mushroom, I believe.

I have not been able to resit and I left the footpath to observe
this colourful mushroom and to take a few pictures.

Chartreuse

"Chartreuse " is the name of the small mountains where I have settled down 12 years ago.
These mountains are not very high (altitude max 2100m) and they are at the border of the
french Alps. The countryside is beautiful, from Spring through Winter !

 Spring (Printemps)

Winter (Hiver)
The name "Chartreuse" comes from a community of monk led by St Bruno in 1084,
the "Chartreux" (Carthusian), who established a monastery called "La Grande Chartreuse"
in the middle of nowhere in these montains. The monastery had a very animated history
(fire, plunder, supression during the french revolution, ....) but it still exists today and
hosts a community of monks.
The rule of the Carthusian monks is very strict: solitude, silence and prayers.

You can see the monastery on the left side, in the forest, at the foot of the mountain. The other set
of buildings below the monastery is a museum where you can learn about the life of the monks.
